Why this exists
Much of my work is with people who have had their boundaries overridden — in relationships, in institutions, in groups that claimed authority over them. If you are one of them, you have every reason to want to know exactly what you are walking into before you arrive.
So this sets out how I work, what a session can involve, and what I will never do. Read it before we begin. Ask me about anything in it.
What I hold across all work
- You direct the pace. You are never obliged to disclose anything, try anything, or continue with anything.
- Consent is ongoing, not a form you sign once. You can withdraw it at any moment, without explanation, and it will not cost you anything — not the session, not my regard, not your welcome to return.
- Saying no is always available. If you cannot find the words, any signal will do. Stopping is always the right answer.
- I do not enter personal, romantic or business relationships with clients.
- I do not work with people I have a personal relationship with.
- I practise within my training. Where something falls outside it, I will say so and help you find the right person.
- I do not diagnose and I do not give medical advice.
What happens in a session
My work draws on counselling, hypnotherapy, somatic practice and intimacy education. Most sessions are conversation. What follows describes what each strand can involve, so nothing arrives unannounced.
Online sessions do not involve physical contact. Where in-person sessions are available, contact is discussed and agreed in advance.
Counselling
Talk therapy. We work with what you bring — history, patterns, grief, recovery, the things that are hard to say out loud. I will ask direct questions. You decide what to answer.
Hypnotherapy
Guided relaxation and focused attention, used to work with material that talking alone doesn't reach. You remain aware throughout and can stop at any point. I will explain what we are doing before we do it. Recordings are made only with your agreement and are for your use.
Somatic work
Attention to what the body is holding — breath, sensation, movement, the physical shape of an emotion. This may be entirely verbal, with me describing and you exploring in your own time.
In person, it may involve contact: being held, breathed with, or given weight and pressure while something moves through you. Grief and fear often need a body to move against, and a lot of people have never been held while they shook. Any contact is discussed and agreed before it happens, and you can end it instantly.
Intimacy education
Education about intimacy, desire, arousal and embodiment. The content is explicit — we will talk directly about sex and the body, in plain language, because vagueness is no use to anyone trying to understand their own experience.
The work is instructional. I explain, describe, and direct attention to your experience. Practices are yours to carry out — sometimes in session, more often in your own time and your own space. Where a session involves you exploring your own body, that is self-directed and guided by conversation.
This is a small part of most sessions, used when it serves the person in front of me, so that a felt sense of ease or connection is something they can take home and repeat without me.
What I do not do
I do not have sex with clients.
I do not use a session for my own gratification.
I do not initiate contact you have not agreed to.
I do not continue anything you have asked to stop.
I do not pressure, persuade, or reframe your reluctance as resistance to be worked through.
If you ever feel any of these lines has been crossed, tell me. If you would rather not tell me, tell someone. You are not obliged to protect me from that conversation.
Clothing and privacy
You wear what you are comfortable in. Some somatic and intimacy work involves less clothing, or a part of the body being uncovered; where it does, it is discussed beforehand, it is your choice, and the work can proceed without it.
I remain clothed.
Sessions are not recorded or observed by anyone else unless you have asked for a recording.
Confidentiality
What you bring stays between us. I do not discuss clients and I do not share identifying details.
There are limits, and you should know them before you begin. I may need to break confidentiality where:
- there is a serious and immediate risk to your life or safety, or to someone else's
- a child or vulnerable person is at risk of harm
- I am required to disclose by law or court order
Wherever possible, I will talk to you first.
I may discuss my work in professional supervision, which is standard practice and itself confidential. Identifying details are not used.
If something goes wrong
If you are unhappy with something in a session, or with how I have conducted myself, I want to hear it. Raise it with me directly at info@waypointwithin.com and I will respond.
If you would rather not come to me, or you have raised it and are not satisfied, you can take it further with the relevant professional or consumer body in your jurisdiction. I will not obstruct that and I will not ask you to keep it quiet.
Ending the work
You can stop at any time, and you don't have to explain why.
I may end the work if I believe it is no longer serving you, or if your needs would be better met elsewhere. Where I do, I will tell you why and, where I can, suggest where else to look.
